    Terrain Project Empty Terrain Project

Post  Tuxman Fri Feb 10, 2012 2:00 am

So from the meeting on 2/9/12, I got the feeling that everyone is interested in making some terrain pieces. I have organized this poll to allow you to vote for your preferred biome and post information for your visions and plans. Hopefully we can get a running plan going before we start construction.

Remember we will be working with 1 foot by 1 foot bases. It is possible for you to use a larger base, but it needs to be made up of 1 foot by 1 foot tiles (example: a 4 foot by 2 foot, or a 2 foot by 2 foot. Nothing in between will work for this).

To make a 6 x 4 board we will need 24 1'1 squares to be provided to everyone. We could proposition theater tech to cut us some from MDF. They hate the stuff. Or we could buy foam boards. Either way, that is the only thing we need to standardize. More information to be posted as interest goes up and planning begins.

Or of course we could always take the very expensive approach and use this.

    http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod730814

The downside being that it costs $300 and it only comes in 6 tiles... But I'm just throwing it out for everyone to see.

Oh yeah I saw that board. If we could afford it it would be epic...

I think we may be able to afford that board.
I know this is quite a commitment, but right now if we all pool $30 (since we have 11 users) each we could get that board (for wasteland scenario or mountains).
If around 19 more users join (that would be epic) we could get $10 person and purchase that board!
(If purchased) we could put it together with another tile that matches its color/theme, which (in my opinion) is wasteland, destroyed city-scape, mountains, or some kind of abandoned chapel in the middle of nowhere.
For now though I think asking Theatre Tech to give us some MDF would be our best bet.

Which one is the "first one?"

They are both those floor mats with almost no difference, and the official "first" one on this page was that $300 6-tile plastic Games Workshop one.

here's a direct link to buy it at sears. It's only $19.99 for a pack of 6 2ft by 2ft foam pads.

It's okay except that it's really rough... It rules out some of the options from the poll above, namely ice, woodland, and cityscape.

Not really, because we can just use the back or just put some like printer paper on top to make ice and whatnot.

    Fair enough.

But assuming we do do these, does anyone have enough spray paint? I have some, but may not be able to supply depending on which terrain style we do.

I think that if we can get everyone to bring 10/15 we can get enough cash to buy some of those panels and then some spray paint and maybe some shrubbery.

I would sincerely like to suggest that we go with the cityscape, considering that GW has many scenery options for cityscapes. I was also wondering if we could look into how much money ASB would be willing to give the club for activities and such.

    @Chris:
In response to your first point: Yes, GW has lots of nice buildings, but like everything else, it's hella expensive.

In response to your second point: However much we made at the Mag Drive. So probably around $300.

Yeah, but I also, think that a urban environment would be a easier because the transitions would be so much easier than with anything else.

Honestly I think if we bought those foam pads we would want to cover them with thin (1/4 or 1/2 inch) foam board. They are good, but logistically fitting them together would be a pain.

    1. You can't carve into them. Too thin, and not very strong. This means no trenches, deeper terrain, underground substructures, or too much downward variance.

    2. You can't build all the way to the edges. The edges have to fit together which means one top and one bottom have to be open for each piece. Doing that forces some pieces not to be compatible.

What you can do is buy them and cut them into squares, but I get the feeling we're overextending ourselves for a minimal return. We want nice thick 1-2 inch foamboard.

I'm thinking that foam board would be better. It's durabler, and we can carve in trenches. (We can keep the parts we carved out and put them back in for no trenches too.)

But we still have to go about finding it.
